The summer has seen some fantastic weather and golf at Dorking, the gents recently travelled to Kent & Surrey and got a rare away victory, sadly I wasn’t involved as I was on holiday but Ray Shinners stepped in to marshal the troops to a well-earned victory. Dorking also beat Redhill & Reigate 5 – 1, the return match is due late in the year.
The club championship was won by Jordan Andrews in a tense play off with Dan Huggett and honouring a long standing tradition Kevin Andrews
won the past captains competition.
My first six months as club captain has been really enjoyable and I would like to thank the members, bar and catering staff for their support and efforts.
2015 Course Report
2015 has been a testing year for us on the course. Spring was cold meaning growth was practically non existent and any warmer temperatures were delayed by at least a month. Spring also saw Matthew Clarke leave us to join the team at Walton Heath after 4 years service at Dorking Golf Club. Matt was quickly replaced by Richard Schofield and David Keep who between them covered the hours lost by Matt’s departure.
In June we managed to get the irrigation system functioning to the best of its ability again and with the later purchase of the sprayer we now had 2 important pieces of kit that we could rely on. Also with the sprayer I was given a back up greens mower for free. This meant that we could now devote a more suitable machine to cutting approaches and tees which has paid off massively in the quality of finish that we have been able to produce on these areas. Also by having three of us we were able to devote more time to attending to those smaller more time consuming jobs like divoting Tee’s, regular bunker work, strimmimg and flymoing banks.
With the summer not being too hot the greens have been a lot more consistent and due to us having a working sprayer and irrigation system we were able to apply necessary feeds and wetting agents when required.
Throughout the year the Tuesday morning working parties have continued and I am sure you have all seen the fantastic clearing jobs that they have produced on the 3rd pond and on the 5th by the field. I would like to personally thank Bob Douglas, Dave Parry and Malcolm Taylor for their hard work on these areas. These enjoyable and worthwhile days will be continuing throughout the winter and if you would like to join in please speak to myself or Bob the Foreman for more details.
Unfortunately the recent employment of an apprentice has come to an end after he decided that greenkeeping wasn’t for him but I am delighted to announce that Dave Ede has accepted the position of part time greenkeeper after his successful spell covering Richard’s gap month in France.
Thank you to all those of you that have donated towards the worm treatment. We were able to purchase enough to treat the greens, tees and the worst areas of the fairways. The product has been delivered and we are waiting for the next forecast rainfall as it requires watering in immediately after application.
Over the winter months, as well as the normal aerating and leaf clearing tasks, we will be improving winter matt areas and replacing the rotten sleepers at the front of the 8th tee. We will also be compiling a list of longer term improvements that we would like to see in the future and will put it out to members for priority.
One final thank you goes to Matt Clarke and Richard Pike who have both given their time for free to help so that I could have a week off. We are very lucky as a club to have two guys who are willing to help out like this.
Winter Rules effective fromThursday 1st October.
Enjoy this fantastic golfing weather that we are experiencing at the moment and here’s hoping that it continues for some weeks to come.
